This xoconostle xnipec paratha is a delicious, crisp, and spicy paratha combinig the tart and sour xoconostle fruit with the fusion of the xnipec salsa flavors in the paratha form. You can serve this with yogurt, sour cream, or cool cucumber raita.
Why this paratha?
For spicy food lovers, this xoconstle xnipec paratha is a must try. The spicy kick from the habanero peppers is just so inviting! This reminds the xnipec salsa. And that's why I named it as this uses the xoconostle and has the xnipec flavors.
This paratha has xoconostle, which is a cactus fruit. It has sour taste. This fruit replaces the sour orange juice in the xnipec salsa in this paratha recipe.
To process this fruit, slice it in half and scoop out the seeds along with the red/pink pulp in the middle. You might want to have sieve just in case to save the juice from the fruit in this process. Then peel it by starting from the broad end using a paring knife. Then chop or grate and use in recipes.
Coming back to the paratha, the xoconostle, habanero and the onions with a hint of cumin and cilantro is a delightful meal. In fact, it is great for any time. there is no need for any sides and you can have it on the go too. A flavorful and nutirtious wholesome meal for you.
This is also easily customizable as you can adjust the habanero pepper quantity based on your heat prefereance and tolerance.
Wedges of this paratha along with sour cream, hummus, or yogurt is a great filling snack or an easy appetizer.
That's not it, In addition to the nutritious benefits of whole wheat, the xoconostle gives a good boost of vitamin C.
Ingredients for xoconostle xnipec paratha:
You will require the following ingredients to make this paratha
Whole wheat flour - this is the base for the parathas adding proteins, fiber, and vitamins.
Xoconostle - the sour tart cactus fruit gives the flavor punch. This is also rich in vitamin C.
Habanero pepper - Adds to the spicy heat. You may adjust the quantity based on heat tolerance.
Salt - Gives flavor
Sesame oil - Adds to the aroma and flavor of the parathas. You can use any oil of your choice. Coconut oil is another favorite one to use in this paratha.
Cilantro and cumin - Adds to the aroma and Earthy flavor
Onion - Gives flavor and texture bite
Useful Tip
Xoconostle and onion will add to the liquid content when they come in contact with salt. Therefore the best idea is to add all the ingredients to the flour, gently mix, and cover for 5-10 minutes. This wetness alone is enough to knead the dough. No extra water is atually necessary to knead it into a dough.
Serving Suggestions
As the name suggests, this is a spicy paratha ans hence I would suggest a cool cucumber raita as the best side to serve these parathas with. You may try this Garbanzo and mint Raita or Cilantro Pachadi too. A side of fresh yogurt or sour cream will also work. This is great to serve for any mea. I love a savory breakfast and with a cup of plain yogurt, this paratha is my heavenly mroning breakfast.
Storage
You can store this crisp xoconostle xnipec paratha at room temperature for a day. However, I would I highly recommend storing in the fridge for a longer shelf life. When needed, you can warm this on the stove and serve.
Are these vegan?
These parathas are vegan. This recipe uses sesame oil. I love the aroma and flavor of sesame oil and it perfectly pairs with onions and spicy habanero flavors. You may use any oil of your choice. I love using coconut oil for this paratha as that would hint a hint of Sri Lankan Pol Roti. If vegan version is not preferred, ghee or butter will also give tasty results.
