The first thing we do early in the morning is take an oil bath, wear new clothes, get blessings from elders, have a little Deepavali Lehyam ( and here is quick one), and most importantly enjoy the special sweets and snacks made for this occasion with friends and family. There is always an elaborate feast on this day. We visit friends, family and share gifts both fun goods as well as edible gifts.
Sweets snd snacks are called as ‘bakshanam’in our home. Everyone’s favorites will be made, sometimes there are new recipes added to the list, or one is replaced, end result is we have lots of sweets and snacks to munch on. When we share with friends and families, we always look forward to our favorites from other families gifts… it’s just like how a kid opens and enjoys the goody bag. For the next ten days we used to have lot if fun filled tasty snacks. A lot of memories built around this festival.
Back home, mom makes so many varieties and thinking about that here is a board I made - Diwali snack board with lots of yummy treats. I love the traditional Whole Wheat Halwa, Okkorai, and Ma Ladoo too! Whole wheat halwa and okkorai are my favorites and learned them from my mom (most of my learning). These amazing traditional recipes bring in the celebration settings in the air to have maximum fun.
