Dal Soup In A Jar #OurFamilyTable

    Dec 13, 2020 · 6 Comments

According to me, soup has a special place. It is great when you are sick. It is comforting on a cold winter day. It is healthy. Soup in a jar is one of the perfect gifts to neighbors, friends, and family. Simple comforting soup is all you could want for especially during winter. When you just add a little fat, pour water, and simmer to enjoy a meal, that gift could be the best. It helps to make a great meal in simple means and spending a lot of quality time with family. Holidays are meant to be lazy. Meals of this kind help to relax and have fun with kids. I prefer soup, and this would be on my list to make and gift.

It is really simple to make. Simple is always comfortable, soothing, satisfying, and delicious. This soup is made with different types of dals. Dals are rich in protein and give enough nourishment to keep hunger at bay. The spices added to it enhance the flavor that would make you want for more. This soup can be served with rice or slices of bread. This can be made in an instant pot, or in a pressure cooker or stovetop too. Keep rice on a pot and switch on the instant pot for the dal soup. Both will be ready quickly, the rice gets cooked by the time the instant pot heats up initially. Alternately, add the rice and corresponding amount of water to the same dal mix while cooking in the instant pot. That's even easier. Or simply serve the soup with a piece of bread. In any method that is a simple and great soup.

I am posting this for "Food Gifts" from Our Family Table group hosted by Christie. We share Recipes From Our Dinner Table! Join our group and share your recipes, too! While you're at it, join our Pinterest board, too!

    Ingredients

    Makes 4-5 servings
Split yellow moong dhal - 3 tsp
    Channa dal - 3 tsp
    Toor dal - 3 tsp
    Whole urad dhal -3 tsp
Split moong dhal with skin - 3 tsp
Split urad dal with skin - 3 tsp
    Split orange lentils,
Masoor dhal (orange) - 3 tsp
    Cumin - 1 tsp
    Salt - 1tsp
    Turmeric -1/2 tsp
    Cayenne - 1/2 tsp
    Dried red chillies - 3
Dried ginger powder - 1/4 tsp
    Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
    Dried mango powder  -1/4 tsp
    Onion flakes - 1 tbsp
Dried garlic powder - 1/2 tsp
    Sun-dried tomatoes - 4 halves, chopped

    Method

Add the dals in the jar in the way you like and make it look colorful. After you add three types, add the dried red chilies (each can be torn into two halves), onion flakes, garlic powder, and the spices, followed by the other dals. Finally, chop the sundried tomatoes and close the lid. Decorate with ties. tags and the instruction tag too.
Type the following instruction on a word document and print out to the size of a label or tag. Glue it onto the tag and tie the tag onto the neck of the bottle.

    Instructions to cook:

Add a tablespoon of butter or oil to the instant pot. Add the contents of the jar and 2 and 3/4 to3 cups water (depending on whether you want and thin or thick soup). Set for 5 minutes in manual - high pressure. After it is done, release pressure, adjust taste and consistency if needed, and serve.

    Tips
Use the sun-dried tomatoes without oil, so it's not messy in the jar.
The dal can be one type too instead of many varieties.
If you don't have dried mango powder, lemon juice can be added after the cooking process. make sure to include it in the directions. It is optional if you would like a little zing.

Fancy packaged soups are so expensive that I've always wanted to make my own. But I could never get the seasoning right--can't wait to try this!

I love the idea of giving something non-perishable and savory around the holiday time. There's so many sweets that have to be consumed quickly - these gifts make the holidays last a little longer!
