    Pandesal

    Dec 8, 2022 · 5 Comments

These are the quintessential Filipino rolls that have a soft interior with a light crunch exterior. These sweet rolls are perfect for breakfast or snack. They can be served with coffee, chocolate drink, along with or without a schmear of butter and/or jam.

I received samples to aid the process of developing recipes and the views expressed are my own only. I received samples from Anolon and Dixie Crystals pure granulated sugar. I have used Dixie Crystals sugar and Anolon baking sheet in this recipe. These products are of great quality and give amazing results every time. I highly recommend these products.

Pandesal, as the name suggests that it is a bread with salt. But in fact these are sweet rolls but not overly sweet. Just sweet with a hint of salt. That’s simply amazing! These rolls are dunked in bread crumbs before baking and that adds to the exterior crunch and I really loved that texture.

These rolls are staple in every Filipino home. A warm roll for breakfast is just comforting and every home has their own recipe and there are numerous variations for the pandesal across the country. There are versions with baking powder too and I am yet to try it. There were versions with tangzhong too. Sometimes bread flour is used in whole or portions to add chewiness. But the original version is just a soft and sweet roll. Whatever the variation, these rolls are amazing to gobble up. I followed FoxyFancy, but made an eggless version.

How can you serve pandesal? Well, these soft and lightly sweet rolls are amazing to pair with coffee or chocolate drink. Filipinos consider dunking these rolls in Filipino hot chocolate, tsokolate, to be comforting. That’s what we did and yes, it was the best! A mild, sweet, and soft roll dunked in sweet chocolate drink, words are not necessary to explain the comfort. It is just the ultimate! These rolls are in fact the breakfast rolls for the Filiinos. It is great to have as such. My personal preference is with a generous portion of Minatamis na Bao, Filipino Coconut Jam. These would  make a delicious breakfast with some butter, or with peanut butter and jelly, or with Nutella too. These rolls would just suit your preference.

Rolls make all the difference to a meal. Whether it is breakfast, lunch, or dinner, rolls make the meal complete. Sometimes, with just butter or jam, they make the simplest comforting quick meal. Here are some rolls from the blog to try.

This is my recipe for Bakeathon 2022. We share three baked recipes every week and these baked goods make the holiday season menu planning easier. Earlier I had shared recipes of Pumpkin Banana Bread and Eggless Banana Almond Gingerbread for Bakeathon 2022. This is my third recipe and check the blog for more fun and exciting baked recipes.

I am also linking this to Sundays on Silverado, Wonderful Wednesday, and What's For Dinner.

    Ingredients
    Makes 12 rolls
All purpose flour - 3 and 1/4 cups
    Aquafaba - 5 tbsp
Dixie Crystals Sugar - 1/3 cup plus 1 tsp
Active dry yeast - 2 tsp
    Salt - 1 tsp
    Milk - 1 cup
    Butter - 2 tbsp melted
    Method
Activate the yeast in warm milk with a teaspoon sugar.

Add the flour, sugar, and salt to a stand mixer and mix it.

Make a well in the center and add the melted butter, activated yeast and aquafaba. Knead to a shaggy dough and then set the machine speed to 5 and knead for 5 minutes. Apply olive oil, cover, and let it double in size. This may take about 1-2 hours.

When the dough is double in size, transfer to a flour dusted surface, punch, and knead to a smooth dough.

Divide the dough into 12 portions, roll each portion into a smooth ball. Cover the rest of the dough to prevent drying. Roll the dough balls on breadcrumbs and place on a baking sheet.

Cover and let it double in size for about 30 minutes to an hour. Preheat the oven to 350degrees F.
Bake for 15 minutes or until the sides turn golden brown and the bottom sounds hollow.
Cool on a wire rack and serve hot or warm.

I have seen these rolls in supermarkets here since there is a sizeable Philipino population here, however never tried having them. Love that they are rolled into sugar. Makes them even better... hehe...

I have seen these rolls before but never tastes them. You mentioned rolling them in breadcrumbs. Are the rolls rolled in breadcrumbs or sugar? I would love to bake these soon.

They are rolled in breadcrumbs and not in sugar. They are sweet rolls as such. Thanks for stopping by Rafeeda.
