    Tortas Fritas

    Apr 10, 2021 · 3 Comments

Tortas Fritas is fried Uruguyan fry bread served with dulche de leche or jam. It is very simple and addictively delicious when eaten hot hot. We loved it with dulche de leche. It is hard to stop with one. They traditionally make this when it is raining and serve with Yerba Mate tea. This snack is delicious whether it is lemon tea or chai latte. When in room temperature too it was delicious. These are also popular in Argentina too.

Rolled dough in discs, deep fried, dusted with powdered sugar and dunked in dulche de leche - now this is called HEAVEN. Either roll the entire dough to 1/4-in thickness and cut out 4-in circles or divide the dough into equal portions and roll to the size. You can make the way it suits you. If you want a bite of heaven, just try this.

I came across this Tortas Fritas in a couple of websites when I was researching about the cuisine from Uruguay. I modified the recipe from Spruce Eats. The actual recipe calls for lard. I used butter instead. This can be made in under 30 minutes and hence a perfect quick one for a crowd too.

We are traveling to Uruguay this month in our Eat The World Recipe Challenge group. It is a great experience to know about different countries, their culture, and food. Check cultureatz if you would like to join and hop on board with us if you are interested in joining our journey...

    Ingredients

    Makes 8, 4-in tortas fritas

    All-purpose flour -1 cup

    Salt - 1/3 tsp

    Baking powder - 1 tsp

    Butter - 2 tbsp

    Milk - 1/3 cup

Oil - 2-3 cups, for frying

    Powdered sugar for dusting

Dulche de leche or jam for serving

    Method

Add the flour, salt, baking powder, and butter in a bowl. Mix thoroughly. Make a dough by adding milk in steps. Rest for 5 minutes.

Heat oil. Divide the dough into 8 pieces. Roll into 4-in discs with 14/-in thickness. Make a hole in the center. Depp fry for 2 minutes each side or till golden brown. Drain the excess oil.

When hot, dust with powdered sugar.

Serve with dulche de leche, or jam and with tea.

Oh, my, those look delicious! I love that they use a baking powder dough, so you don't need to wait for yeast to rise, yet you can fulfill your doughnut cravings! They look absolutely divine and addictive. I'm sure it would be hard to eat just one.
