    Onion Puff

    Dec 5, 2021 · Leave a Comment

This is a simple and delicious snack made with onions and puff pastry, as the name implies. The hint of fennel in this puff makes it extraordinary. This can be a great appetizer and could be made in different sizes or shapes too!
This is based on the tiny samosas we get from a supermarket chain, Nilgiris, back in India. They sell five tiny samosas in packets, with onion filling that has a fennel flavor. It will have a hint of fennel and this makes it different from other street samosas.  Kids love it too snd would ask us to get the entire batch from that store when we visit family there. We love that teeny tiny flavorful samosa and wanted to make this puff based on that flavor.
The spice levels had to be adjusted for the puff. The puff pastry sheet is very buttery and flaky that the samosa wrapper. To compensate the sweetness from the onion and the butter from puff pastry, the salt and cayenne should be on the higher side to bring it to the exact flavor of the samosa.
These puffs give the same exact satisfaction of the tiny Nilgiri samosas and this is one of our family favorite. These are like turnovers, but they can also be made into tarts or cups too! These are great appetizer too for any occasion.
I always use Pepperidge Farm puff pastry sheets. It comes in two sheets that are folded. This recipe uses four folds or one and one-third of the package. If you are using any other brands, cut to this size or adjust the quantity of the filling accordingly.

December 5 is Puff Pastry Day and we are sharing savory/sweet recipes with puff pastry. Christie of A Kitchen Hoor's Adventure is hostinh the event in #ourfamilytable group. We share Recipes From Our Dinner Table! Join our group and share your recipes, too! Ingredients
    Makes 8
Puff pastry sheet - 1 and 1/3 sheets (Pepperidge Farm)
Red onion - 5 cups, sliced
    Oil - 2 tbsp
    Salt - 1 and 1/4 tsp
    Cayenne - 1 tsp
    Fennel seeds - 1/2 tsp
    Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
    Cayenne - 3/4 tsp
    Method
Heat oil in a pan over medium flame, add the fennel seeds. Add the sliced onions and cook for 5-6 minutes stirring now and then. Add salt and turmeric and continue cooking for another 7 minutes. It would reduce in quantity.
Add the cayenne, stir and cook for 2 more minutes. Transfer to a bowl and set aside to cook.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Take a sheet of defrosted Pepperidge Farm puff pastry sheet. Open the trifold and divide it into 6 portions (cut each fold into two, each approximately 3X4).

Place about one and half tablespoons of the onion filling in the center and fold over like a turnover. Crimp the edges with a fork. Repeat with other pieces of puff pastry sheet.

Place in a baking sheet and bake for 16-17 minutes at 400 degrees.

Remove from the oven, cool for five minutes and these are ready to be served.

These sound fabulous. I love how sweet onions become when they are caramelized.

I think these would be really popular in our household. I even might use onion jam if I'm in a hurry!
